In the ACOO (A Company of One) world, it’s a customer referral. Someone you’ve worked with or for who can “vouch” for your experience, and accomplishments. How you use them is really up to you, but if I were you I’d prepare the top 3 to 5 people who can give you a really positive reference for each of the types of positions you are targeting. If you were seeking a new customer and it seemed like the were getting ready to buy, you’d have some great stories of customers that were more than satisified with the work you did and how it helped their business. Why don’t you have the same thing for your career? Homework time:
- Ask yourself: What were your biggest accomplishments in your last position?
- Ask yourself: Who did you work with or for on those projects or programs?
- Ask them what they thought your contribution was to the success of the program.
- Was it positive?
- Ask them if they would be willing to be a reference for you…
Start building a CACHE of referrals and positive feedback. Know what people think of the product you are putting in the marketplace. Believing you have added value to your “Customer” is one thing, having your former and current customers validate it is the CASH- Eh?!
